Cross + Covenant Bible

A free, read-only connector that puts the Bible inside Claude. Ask for a passage in the World English Bible or the King James Version, search for a word or a phrase, follow a reading plan day by day, and open the Cross + Covenant daily devotional. Every verse comes from public-domain text stored on crossandcovenant.co. No account, no sign-in, nothing to install.

  • Claude (web and desktop): open Settings, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector, name it Cross + Covenant Bible, and paste the URL. Leave authentication empty.

  • Any MCP client: the server speaks Streamable HTTP at the URL above and needs no authentication.

Tools

All five tools only read. None of them changes anything, anywhere.

Get a Bible passage get_passage

Returns a verse, a range, whole chapters, or several references joined with a semicolon. Up to 150 verses or 2 chapters per call; a longer request returns the first part and names the rest.

Inputs: reference (for example John 3:16-21, Psalm 23, 1 Cor 13:4-7), translation (web or kjv, default web)

Search scripture search_scripture

Finds verses that contain your words, best matches first. Common words are ignored and a word also matches its longer forms.

Inputs: query (2 to 200 characters), translation, book or testament (optional), limit (1 to 25, default 10)

List reading plans list_reading_plans

Lists the M'Cheyne one-year plan, which follows the calendar, and the five topical plans, with each plan's id and length.

Inputs: none

Get a reading plan day get_reading_plan_day

Returns one day of a plan by day number, or by date for the one-year plan. With include_text it adds the passage text, up to 150 verses.

Inputs: plan_id, day or date (YYYY-MM-DD), include_text (true or false), translation

Get the devotional get_devotional

Returns the Cross + Covenant devotional for a date: scripture, a short reflection, and a prayer. Defaults to today in Mountain Time.

Reading plans

  • M’Cheyne one-year plan (mcheyne): Robert Murray M’Cheyne’s four daily readings. Day 1 is January 1, so any date has a reading.
  • Topical plans (hope, peace, strength, psalms, life-of-jesus): one passage a day for seven or thirty days. Start on day 1 whenever you like.

Translations and sources

The connector serves two translations, both in the public domain: the World English Bible (2020 stable text) and the King James Version (1769 text, public domain outside the United Kingdom). Both come from eBible.org and are stored on our own server, so a request never leaves crossandcovenant.co. No other translation appears in any answer.

Devotionals quote scripture too. Each one is checked word for word against the WEB and KJV before the connector will serve it. On a date whose devotional cannot pass that check, the tool says so and returns that day’s scripture in the World English Bible instead. The connector’s devotionals quote scripture only: lines the website quotes from other writers are left out here.

Limits

  • 150 verses or 2 chapters per passage. Ask for the rest by the reference the answer names.
  • Up to 25 search results per call.
  • Fair-use limits shared by everyone: 120 calls a minute per tool, 300 a minute in total, and 20,000 a day. Past a limit the tool answers with the time to try again.

Troubleshooting

  • “Unknown book”: use a book of the 66-book Protestant canon. Common abbreviations work (Gen, Ps, Matt, 1 Cor, Rev). The answer suggests the closest book name.
  • “has N verses, so verse X does not exist”: the verse number is past the end of that chapter in the translation you chose.
  • A verse comes back empty in the WEB (for example Acts 8:37): the World English Bible leaves that verse out. The KJV includes it.
  • The connector does not show up in Claude: check the URL is exactly the one above, with no trailing slash, and that authentication is left empty.
